As if losing Mitad last week wasn’t enough, two of our friends and one of my clients each lost a pet in the same week. (Three cats total and one dog.) What a sad week.
So imagine our shock last week when Sosta showed up with a wound over her right eye. She had loved on me at ~5am on Saturday and was her usual very-lovey-in-the-early-morning self. So, I’m sure she wasn’t injured at that time.
By ~8:30 when she heard me stir, she returned to my side. She avoided me just enough that I couldn’t pet her head. She has what looks like a bite mark.
She and Purrrrrl have never been close. So, in the wake of Mitad’s death, I was not surprised that there had been a bit of a battle. So, I grabbed Purrrrrl and looked through her paws and teeth for traces of black fur or skin, but found none. I don’t know if she did it or not, but there are no signs she did. I looked all over the house for a tuft of black fur—thinking that maybe Sosta rubbed too hard against the sharp edge of something or snagged her fur—but found nothing.
I knew I was being paranoid, so I called Jes to come look at it. I didn’t want to bother the Emergency Vet unless it was necessary. We all agreed it was something that a vet would say “keep Neosporin on it and if it gets worse come back”. So, we have been. I had a bit of a scare when after it looked better, it looked worse again, but Emil assured me that I was just overreacting after the week we’ve had.
So, I feel like the worst pet-parent ever. And aparently, I’m bad mojo for our friends, too. (come to think of it, Jes and another firend’s new puppy got into a fight the same week.)
[And as I sit here writing this right now, two of our fishes are chasing each other so fast around the tank that they are jumping out of and splashing back into the tank. Ahhhh the pains and joys of critterhood.]

Dear family and friends,
It’s time for “early Easter”. We are leaving town today for the annual Luza Family Easter Camping Trip. We will both be back online on Monday, March 24th.
We hope you all enjoy this early Rite of Spring and find a way to celebrate the season with those closet to you.
be careful
-Lori

For years, I’ve been hoarding “good” boxes. I use them not only for wrapping gifts, but also at events to create height and interest in displays. They are especially good for silent auctions! We had waaaaay too many. I had every intention of culling them and taking them to the recycling center, but for a couple of years, now, it just hasn’t happened.
One of the things I did in December (as I was trying to get some of our home in order) was purchase bins for recycling. So, while I had not been doing this good deed for our planet as much as I should have, now, I am. Diligently. So, I had 3+ months worth of glass, aluminum, plastic, etc.
Neighbor South, Jessica, had almost as much as we did. So, we loaded up the truck and made a run to the local recycling center. Wow. We looked like Sanford & Son going down the road! And, the faces of the staff at the recycling center were hil-air-i-ous! Jes pointed out that, as neighbors who are friends (and I’ll add, and as home owners instead of apartment renters) many of the parties are at our homes. Of course, this is true, but we mostly needed something to keep us from feeling like total lushes with all the beer boxes, beer bottles, and wine bottles.
Baby Truck was full
Of course, it’s not as bad as it looks. Most of it was cardboard. And, the stuff underneath was all sorted.
Lesson learned: I knew there was one kind of glass we couldn’t recycle. Turns out, it’s green. So, no more purchases of Dos XX (or Hiney or Rolling Rock). And, I need to be careful when purchasing red wine as some of my favorite brands come in green bottles.
I haven’t had a weekend that was just for me in a very long time….every single one has been a wedding or an event or a project or a shoot or work or something….for longer than I can remember back.
So, when this weekend thrust itself up on me with no real tasks/projects at hand, I took full advantage.
Went out with our FDC group. We started out with dinner at La Bodega and then moved on to drinks at Fitzwilly’s and O’Bannons. After Emil and I left, the group moved to Dudleys and “closed” Northgate. Emil had just discovered BitStrips earlier in the week, so there was much conversation about all his cartooning of our little group. What a fun night!
I slept in until 11:30 and then met with Mike & Tom to trade party platters and other GAYla equipment. It was such a pretty day and I felt like being outside, so Jes and I teamed up for some recycling and then yard work. I started mowing the yards while she weed-eeded and trimmed things. We ordered pizza, and then Emil and I watched three, yes THREE movies: Rush Hour 3 (very funny), Bourne Ultimatum (very good/exciting), and We Own the Night (horrible title, good movie).
I still felt like being outside, so I did more yard work, walked with Jes and Buddy & Sam (whose Cajun names a Beaudreaux and Sambeaux), helped her bathe them, and worked on the path between our houses. I also righted her mail box (someone hit it a couple of weeks ago) and picked up some of the rocks I had tossed out of the yard the day before. Emil and I went to Schotzi’s for my weekly Crawfish PilgrimageTM. Later, Cady came over for some good friend/quality time.
It was an amazing weekend of doing a bunch of nothing. While my initial reaction is “ooooh when can I do THAT again?” I know myself better than that. If every weekend was this uneventful, I’d be bored out of my MIND!

My co-worker, Anup, ordered some lenses and mounts for one of our systems. He spent about $100 at ThorLabs, Inc.
When the box arrived, it was much larger than necessary. Inside, he found a box about the size of a kids’ shoe box full of treats and goodies: twizzlers, cheezits, peanuts, power bars, etc. The red box has an image of a green monster/lizzard/dinosaur eating a hotdog and says “Lab Snacks: A Treat For Humans“.
What a clever and smart marketing technique. The box has the ThorLabs logo on all sides and has been sitting on a table in the middle of our office all week. Everyone has talked about it.

Bitstrips is an upcoming comic strip creator that’s made the process of creating a strip pretty darn simple. I’ve come across a handful of services that aim to provide you with a simplified comic strip creation tool, but Bitstrips is the easiest and most social I’ve seen so far. Bitstrips is currently in beta, and was launched at SXSW.
With drag’n’drop capabilities, you can start by creating your own character, or using one that’s in the vast Bitstrips library. Any characters created by others can be used by the rest of the community. You can modify things like facial expressions, clothing, panel colors, and of course text. Your completed comic can be shared across the web.
Click here to cycle through my current comic strips. Some are inside jokes, but then again, everything can be considered an inside joke to people with no sense of humor…
