It’s Crawfish Season

Sunday, 2008-February-17 by

As of today, it’s official: we have a Sunday tradition of having Crawfish at Schotzi’s.

It starts at 4pm. Chris has his own special recipe that is amazing!

It’s a great way to have an early dinner with friends and then still get home in time to get some work done!

In my mind, Crawfish = Spring, so I love the idea of sitting down to a few pounds of the spicy critters!
(If you plan to go, be on time, else they might be gone! Last week, they were gone by 6pm!)

Overheard in New York

Thursday, 2008-February-14 by

I love the “Overheard in…” series of humor sites.

Today’s Overheard in New York really cracked me up!

And, does anyone know what ever happened to “Overheard in College Station”

Pyro Mongolian Fusion Grill

Friday, 2008-February-8 by

Our friend Jeff opened Pyro this week. We went last night and it was fabulous. All the food is fresh-never-frozen. You put it together in whatever combination you want. There are 25 veggies, half a dozen meats, ~16 sauces, 20+ seasonings, and 5 starches. Whether you want chicken Alfredo or cilantro beef or teriyaki pork, there is something for you!

Lunch is $10/14 and dinner (with seafood options) is $12/16 including drinks and tax.

It’s a great variety and is sooooo much healthier than just about any other food in town!

I love my job!!

Sunday, 2008-February-3 by

I have an amazing job! (Bet y’all never thought you’d hear that from me! You know I’m picky. I actually expect respect and trust from my boss and reporting line! gasp, the horror!)

I work for one of the nicest guys you’d ever meet.

I work with the nicest men and women I’ve ever been on a staff with. We are a diverse set of colors, religions, backgrounds, and experiences. Our respect for one another—and for all humans—makes this job heavenly.

We make the coolest stuff, and I’m learning so much. While I’m in over my head with our content, they all take the time to patiently explain it all to me. Any one of them would make a great faculty member, if they wanted the headaches of a classroom and the drama of tenure. Anyone want to know about what our various orbits are called and what each one is best for? Now, I can teach you (a little).

I work hard, and just when I wonder if I’m pulling my own weight, I receive praise and admiration from my boss.

You know people say there is “one of those in every office”? Well, we don’t have any of them. Everyone is nice and professional—from our PhD wielding execs and scientists to our formerly-enlisted production techs—I’ve never been this happy at work. I’ve been out a couple of days with the “damn cold” and I miss them….all of them.

For those of you who have given me resumes, I’ve passed them along to our VP. He’s a brilliant man. He’s ridiculously busy, but he will make the time to take a look.

Other than wedding photography, I have never liked a job this much. Dare I use the word bliss? I think I shall.

cold.

Sunday, 2008-February-3 by

damn this cold.

I started to feel it on Tuesday, but a huge deadline at work (for which I’m the last one to touch the documents) kept me at work until Wednesday at ~3:30. I went home with a fever and chills, got into my warmest pajamas, and crawled into a heavily covered bed. I stayed there until Thursday morning while Emil went to his darts league, spent all day Thursday on the couch, and was back in bed early Thursday evening. I missed a meeting and a film screening for this damn cold!

In the mean time, Emil came down with it, too. The good news is that the incubation is pretty quick, so you know you’re sick before you infect too many folks. The bad news is that it comes so fast, you might not get away from everyone. He also had to stay at work sick until a meeting was over. My guess is that those in the meeting have it, now, too. I felt some better on Friday and went out with friends while Emil recuperated.

We’ve both spent the entire weekend on the couch and in bed, watching TV, downing cough syrup and aspirin, and getting nothing done.

damn this cold for reuining my week’s plans AND my weekend.

Hero Howard

Friday, 2008-February-1 by

Several mornings each week, Emil and I stop at the convenience store near our house. We have gotten to know the staff fairly well, especially, Howard.

After fighting a cold with fever/chills for two days, this morning was my first adventure out of our home. While I wasn’t headed to work, I did want a real1 Diet Coke. When I rounded the corner, I saw Howard. He was half way between the pumps and the door, walking toward the store with a fire extinguisher in his hand.

When I got inside the store, everyone was laughing, so I asked, “Howard, did you have to put out a fire?” Sure enough, he did. Then I realized, the laughter was the nervous “oh, we’re OK” kind.

Static electricity sparked between the pump and the guy’s gas tank and started a fire. Howard had grabbed the extinguisher by the front door, ran out to the pickup and pump, and smothered the fire quickly. Meanwhile, the girls had run to the back door, headed to safety. The owner of the pickup seemed quite calm by it all. When I looked back out into the parking lot, I noticed something that I had missed before (hopefully because my eyes were on Howard and hopefully not because I pay too little attention to my world): a tanker truck was filling the underground tanks, and his truck and hoses were closest to this very pump/customer.

This was surely a giant disaster averted by some alert employees and one particularly brave man.

As Howard rang up my purchase, his hands were still trembling from the adrenaline rush. I didn’t bother to question why my usual purchase wasn’t the usual price. I wished them a calm day.

Howard, on behalf of our neighborhood, Thank You.

1Real Diet Coke comes in a couple of forms: it has caffeine, it has aspartame, and it comes from either a can or a good fountain. I keep the Splenda version at home. “Our” convenience store has the best fountain recipe in town. (Yes, I know they should all be the same, but they aren’t; several places in town have bad Diet Coke.) From plastic, some of the flavor and much of the fizz is lost.
